THE ART OF LIVING...

with Larry Rosenberg (far right)

The names of two of his books are Breath by Breath, and Three Steps to Awakening.

The name of his recent course at CIMC (Cambridge Insight Meditation Center) the meditation center he founded, is Don’t Turn Away. I am talking about the incomparable Larry Rosenberg. Larry is a truly gifted, compassionate, and wise meditation teacher, writer and scholar. I have had the great pleasure of sitting with him, studying with him, and even getting a hug from him!
Simply Being, not grasping, fearing, or worrying

Over the last nine years I have been a student at his center. They are very serious about meditation and the Buddha’s teachings. One thing I can say with certainty is when you truly open your eyes to your own life, and, see all of it fully (the good, the not so good, and the in-between) you will slowly be able to live a more full, vibrant, and awakened life. One thing I learned at CIMC is “Wise View is everything.”
So many things bother us or get in our way, but, if we step back and truly see, fully see things as they are from a wise perspective, it can and will help us. The cause of our suffering usually leads back to us. Self-awareness is crucial to living a happier and less bogged down life. Freeing ourselves up to live a more vibrant life is an extraordinary gift to give ourselves, our family, and ultimately the world. It’s so much  easier to blame someone else for our problems and woes. But, for peace of mind, taking time to sit in silence, truly look at ourselves, and pay attention to how we are actually living, well, it sure seems worth it to me. You will literally breathe easier…and moment by moment appreciate life so much more as you fully bloom as a human being. What could be better than taking full  responsibility for your own life?! Not always so easy to do and that is why Larry titles the class, Don’t Turn Away.
Throwing fear aside and taking my Ideas to Harvard
The only secret is practice, practice, practice and be extremely kind to yourself every step along the way as you cultivate the extraordinary art of living well...

WHEN THE LIGHTNING STRIKES…

Yesterday, I had planned my entire day around going to hear my meditation guru, Larry Rosenberg, speak. But, Mother Nature had other plans which would be the antithesis of a quiet meditation….

I started out preparing a blog post. I washed and ironed Aunty’s clothes, worked on an upcoming project, and did a little cleaning and organizing, like I promised myself I would. Then I walked into town for some errands. About 3:30, while I was out Gracie called me on my cell phone to say, she didn’t think she would be able to come and sit with aunty due to the “tornado watch.” I had no idea what she was talking about. We agreed to talk a little later. About 4:30, on my way back home, a friend rang my cell phone warning me not to go out because of a bad storm coming our way. Suddenly the sky appeared dark, and there was an ominous feeling in the air. Gracie called back to cancel. I knew this meant no meditation or dharma talk, so I decided that as soon as I got home I would do my own meditation before Aunty arrived back from her day program.

As I approached my house my downstairs neighbor was at the door waiting for me. She told me,
“There’s a tornado watch. I am thinking of going down to the basement!” She added, “Do you have any kind of helmet?” The sky turned black. I ran upstairs and turned off my computer. I closed all the windows, drew all the shades and unplugged appliances. When I turned on the TV it showed a tornado hitting the Springfield Massachusetts area (which is less than an hour away). Suddenly on the television screen I saw something I had never seen before; a tornado warning for my town. My neighbor ran up the stairs and said, “I have my transistor radio all set up and I think we should go into the basement.” What made this all the more frightening were the sirens going off from her Weather Channel station as the tornado watch became a tornado warning.

My neighbor and I were prepared to take cover in the basement if the tornado got closer. From her television set we could see the damage the tornado was doing as it headed closer to us. And from her new I-pad we could track the storm like professional meteorologists.

I did not want to go down to the basement without Aunty, and she was not home yet. I paced the floor, and peeked out the window. Miraculously I remained calm and did my deep breathing. After all, I was supposed to be meditating.

At 6:10, minutes after Aunty arrived, the anchorman announced that the tornado was south of us. But, there could be another one coming. It was confusing at times because there seemed to be conflicting, and delayed reports. Things were also happening very quickly.

Aunty and I went back to our place and continued watching the news stations. It was horrible. In western and central Massachusetts, four people died and many lost their homes, their cars, and much damage was done. The governor declared a state of emergency. I just couldn’t believe this was happening in Massachusetts.

About eight in the evening, Aunty went to bed and I continued to watch. They had kept us on alert till eleven p.m.

Lucky for us we did not get hit with a tornado, but, we experienced severe thunder and lightning like I have never seen. I decided to go out front and take a picture, but at that exact moment the newscaster said, “Do not go outside. This is not your average thunder storm.” The lightning (hotter than the surface of the sun) was striking 45 times a minute! It was unreal. At about nine o’clock, the thunder was so loud the sound of one bolt actually jolted me. Aunty woke up. She was terrified! She kept asking… “What’s wrong? With each thunderous bang she said, “This is awful.” I held her hand and rubbed her back. Eventually the storm passed, Aunty went back to bed, and we were back to normal.

One of the things I learned from this experience is how much people care. We got several phone calls from concerned friends wanting to make sure we were okay. Those in the midst of the storm comforted and helped one another, many sheltered strangers. I realized that Mother Nature is the strongest force on earth. If you have even the slightest experience with any kind of flood, tornado, hurricane, volcanic eruption, earthquake, or landslide, you know exactly what I am talking about. I will certainly keep doing all I can to stay on her good side. She’s indomitable!

I also learned that as long as I don’t move from where I am living now, I should be able to survive anything. My neighbor is a true boy scout. She is prepared for everything. She’s also got the Weather Channel, an I-Pad, I-phone, transistor radio, two bike helmets, and a crate of canned food. As a savvy world traveler, she has experience with every kind of weather change and knows how to handle unpredictable situations.

And, the most important thing I learned from yesterday’s natural disaster so close to home, is the power of meditation. If you have a meditation practice under your belt you may not be able to avoid a natural disaster, but, you have a much better chance of surviving one if you are calm and aware. Meditation puts you in harmony with the universe, yourself, and the world. It's the opposite of any natural disaster.

WHAT ARE YOU HOLDING ON TO?

Lots of stuff...

For over five years now, I have been promising myself I will get my living space clean and organized. That’s not so easy to do when every item in your life, holds meaning. And, I do mean everything. I have saved all seven ticket stubs from the film Mama Mia. I went to see it three times with Aunty and Gracie, once with my mother and sister, and, a few times with friends. It was such a happy film, I kept going back for more. Those ticket stubs are a reminder of how much fun I had.

I still have a birthday card someone gave me when I turned twenty five! How can I throw away something that says, you make the world a better place? But, one of my favorites in a long list of things I can’t seem to let go of, is the Christmas wrapping paper from a Christmas long ago. I just love knowing that precious paper was wrapped around a gift from my Aunty and Uncle D. However, as my stuff piles up, it might be worth  exploring my deep attachment to these things.
I will show you a picture of me with a bad hair day, or even Aunty without her wig. I just can’t show you my clutter. But, it’s starting to get in my way.

Now, I am turning to this blog for help. I have repeatedly stated that I think this blog has some magic to it. When I write about wanting to sell my book, I step out and literally see stars all over my balcony. When I say I love the snow, we get a blizzard. So, maybe, if I put it out there that I need some help getting and staying organized this blog will aid me in some way. I hope this post helps you to let go of whatever you are clinging to. Something tells me that underneath all the clutter is an embryo to a more relaxed and balanced way of being.

What are you holding on to? Make way for Feng Shui. Make room to breathe.
Part of my answer could be in my previous post. Larry Rosenberg, my meditation teacher, would surely say….clinging is a cause for suffering.

I think I might be ready to start throwing out the old ticket stubs, even one at a time. And, take some comfort in knowing that no matter how many trash bags I might fill, I can't throw away memories.

TWO WISE MEN AND THREE BRAZIL NUTS...

Saturday, I went to hear two wise men speak, and was handed wisdom on a silver platter. And, just now, I got the clear and distinct message that; it’s all in what I do with that gift. I can look at my notes, think about what I heard, or I can actually start making better choices and paying more attention to how I am living each day, each moment, and become even more aware of how every morsel of what goes into my mouth counts, and has an enormous effect on my health and how I feel.

One of the speakers was Larry Rosenberg, my meditation guru. He happens to be the wisest person I have ever met. I could listen to him speak for hours. I call Larry my Dalai Lama. He injects humor with his wisdom, and he says profound things in simple ways, like “Pay attention to the way you are actually living, with the emphasis on the actually.” He founded the Cambridge Insight Meditation Center…a place that has helped me make significant changes in my life. By guiding me as I cultivate a meditation practice, CIMC is helping me build a sturdy surfboard to ride the waves of life. I start to see things more clearly just walking the path to their door. My feelings are, just about everyone will reap enormous benefits (much more than you can imagine) with a meditation practice. And, one of the things Larry stressed on Saturday was that life itself is practice. There is just as much wisdom and beauty standing in line at the grocery store, or in your personal relationships, as there is on the cushion. Life is practice!

Paul Schulick, a friend of Larry’s, is a master herbalist, founder, and chief formulator of products for NEWCHAPTER Supplements. NEWCHAPTER has been a pioneer in bringing together the wisdom of nature and cutting edge scientific technology. Having tried Paul’s impeccable products, I can assure you it’s true.

These two wise men talked about becoming whole through meditation and by carefully selecting what goes into your body. When you eat well, and take proper supplements, you are more relaxed and in a better state to receive any of the benefits of meditation. And when you meditate you are more aware of what does go into your system. It all works to your benefit. According to them, it’s all about deepening and refining our practice, our life. What could be better than that? And, by taking better care of our bodies and minds now, we have a better chance of reducing the pains of old age!

Because these two wonderful men have so much to offer, I highly recommend Larry’s Books

• L. Rosenberg, Breath by Breath: The Liberating Practice of Insight Meditation, Shambhala Publications, 2004. ISBN 1590301366.

• L. Rosenberg and D. Guy, In the Light of Death: On the Art of Being Truly Alive, Shambhala Publications, 2001. ISBN 1570628203

And, Paul’s superior products http://www.newchapter.com/.

One thing that Paul said is he eats three Brazil nuts a day. It may sound funny but, I looked it up and, these nuts are extremely nutrient-rich and contain protein, copper, niacin, magnesium, fiber, vitamin E and selenium. Selenium is a powerful antioxidant that works to neutralize dangerous free radicals. A study at the University of Illinois even found that the high amounts of selenium in Brazil nuts may help prevent breast cancer. But, use in moderation, a handful at a time.

To bring this all together, Paul also recommended Qigong, a wonderful form of martial arts I have suggested throughout this blog. I was tickled too, to know that Larry drinks Rishi tea. You know how much I LOVE that product. Practice wise action and order some Dragon Well or White Peony now…. sip, meditate, and blossom!
